    Learning about web development software

    By Staff Writer

One of the first questions companies ask, is how do we develop our website? In order to create, and upload files onto a server you will need a web-publishing tool. These software applications allow you to publish and revise files in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) - the format used to publish, and access web pages). There are basically two types of publishing tools that are code-based and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). WYSIWYG is a reference to the visual point and click operating approach. While many webmasters do design their sites with strictly code-based tools, it's typically going to be easier, and faster to use a WYSIWYG tool. The reason a WYSIWYG tool is useful is because you can actually see how your site will look, and you are still able to switch to a code-based interface if you need to. Ultimately, the big advantage is that WYSIWYG tools offer all the same functions as code-based tools and more. Purchasing such software tools are a wise investment for any company looking to build an effort online presence.

Web publishing tools can range anywhere from no charge to thousands of dollars. However, the typical price range is from $50-$300. They offer the capability to publish fully functional web sites quickly and with minimal programming knowledge. Other complements to purchasing a web-publishing tool would be a graphics design tool, which allows you to create images for your web site. One very affordable, highly recognized graphics design software is Jasc's Paint Shop Pro (www.jasc.com). For advanced interactive images, Macromedia (www.macromedia.com) offers a wide array of graphics design software.

Among the most supported and recognized web-publishing tools in the industry is Microsoft FrontPage 2000, or FrontPage 98. This program is widely supported by most hosting companies and is available on both the PC and Macintosh platform. The reason FrontPage has become so popular is because it offers a wide array of easy to use templates, form setup functions, Java, plug-ins, and other basic web site necessities, while integrating highly advanced features for experts. It's also nice because it comes complete with an easy to use FTP (file transfer protocol) tool that allows you to navigate, and publish files with ease. Its street price is $149 (although many online stores will offer this product at a discount). One of the best features of FrontPage is the amount of support that can be found. The majority of web hosting companies offer specific FrontPage tutorials, support, and server extensions. There are also a number of websites dedicated to helping FrontPage developers. For these reasons FrontPage is a smart consumer choice for businesses of all sizes.

Another very popular tool is Macromedia Dreamweaver. While FrontPage is seen as a business solutions tool, Dreamweaver is the stylish alternative. One of the main reasons people find themselves pleased with Dreamweaver is because of its association with web site graphics programs such as Fireworks. For example, one great function on Dreamweaver is that you're able to test graphical objects while editing your site, such as Netscape plug-ins, Flash, and Shockwave. Dreamweaver carries a street price of $299.

When looking for a web-publishing tool be sure to search around for places selling the products at exclusive sale prices. The web offers a lot of great price reductions. You may also seek to purchase this software through a local retailer – who may have information on other web development solutions that might be applicable for your company.
